BROOKLYN FILM ACADEMY

A GROWING HOME FOR FILMMAKERS 

Brooklyn Film Academy first started working with youth in 2016, teaching after school filmmaking classes in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.  It is now continually expanding to include programs for a wider age-range, throughout the year.

Movies, documentaries and all types of online videos are a large part of our daily experience. They help deliver us the news, shape our perceptions of other communities and influence our choices as consumers. Considering the vast influence of media, there is nothing more crucial than giving our children and youth the tools to think critically about movies by learning to make them.

Our main focus at the academy is to educate our students on the fundamentals of filmmaking. This includes lessons in writing and story development, camera operation, acting, directing and editing. Our classes give access to a platform where kids can voice their concerns, express their feelings and be part of a larger community. By giving cameras to young girls and boys, we give them a voice and help them realize their potential.
